چکیده

Low cross section experiments to produce super-heavy elements have increased the demand for high intensity heavy ion beams at energies of about 5 MeV/nucleon at the 88-Inch Cyclotron at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. Therefore, efforts are underway to increase the overall ion beam transmission through the axial injection line and the cyclotron. The ion beam emittance has been measured for various ion masses and charge states. Beam transport simulations including space charge effects were performed for both the injection line and the ion source extraction. The relatively low nominal injection voltage of 10 kV was found to be the main factor for ion beam losses, because of beam blow up due to space charge forces at higher intensities. Consequently, experiments and simulations have been performed at higher injection energies, and it was demonstrated that the ion beams could still be centered in the cyclotron at these energies. Therefore, the new injector ion source VENUS and its ion beam transport system (currently under construction at the 88-Inch Cyclotron) are designed for extraction voltages up to 30 kV.

Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, Berkeley, CA 94720, U.S.A. BEARS is an ongoing project to provide a light-ion radioactive-beam capability at the 88-Inch Cyclotron at LBNL. Light radioactive isotopes are produced at a 10 MeV proton medical cyclotron, transported 350 m via a high-speed gas transport capillary, cryogenically separated, and injected into the 88-Inch Cyclotron’s ion source. Operational Performance of the Lbl 88-inch Cyclotron

The 88-Inch Cyclotron began regular operation with the ECR (Electron Cyclotron Resonance) source in January 1985. Since then about 80% of the cyclotron operating schedule has been with the ECR source. The light-ion filament source is used only for runs two or more shifts in length using proton, deuteron, 3He, or alpha beams. Occasionally the polarized ion source is used. The heavy-ion PIG sourc...

Venus: the next Generation Ecr Ion Source

The construction of VENUS, an Electron Cyclotron Resonance ion source designed to operate at 28 GHz, is nearing completion. Tests with the superconducting magnet assembly produced axial magnetic field strengths of 4 T at injection and 3 T at extraction and a sextupole field of 2 T at the plasma wall. These fields are sufficient for optimum operation at 28 GHz. We expect a shift to higher charge...

Transverse-acceptance Measurement System for Jaea Avf Cyclotron

We are developing an acceptance measurement system to evaluate the matching of the emittance of an injection beam to the acceptance of the AVF cyclotron. The system is composed of a phase-space collimator in the low energy section and beam intensity monitors which are installed just after the phase space collimator and in the high energy section. The phase-space collimator, which consists of tw...
